FERRUM, VA - Christopher Newport's men's tennis team completed a 3-0 trip with a pair of victories Saturday in the western part of Virginia.

The Captains shut out USA South rival Ferrum 9-0 in the morning, then went to Roanoke and beat the Maroons 8-1 in the afternoon.

The victories left CNU at 10-8, 3-1 in the conference. The Captains will finish their regular season with a pair of home matches, meeting Shenandoah at 2 p.m. Wednesday and Methodist at noon on Saturday, April 10.

Against Ferrum (3-7, 1-4 USA South), the Captains swept three doubles points on pro-set victories by the teams of Dusty Nelson-Lorenzo Sison, Eric Shulman-Kyle Tobin and Martin Brown-Tom Whaling.

Those six players then won singles matches in straight sets against the Panthers, including Shulman's 6-0, 6-1 victory at the top spot.

Against Roanoke (6-5), which is likely to finish in the upper half of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, Tobin and Whaling won 8-0 at No. 3 doubles and Brown and Sison pulled out an 8-6 triumph at No. 2.

The Maroons' Jon Roy and Sam Sherrill won 8-2 over Shulman and Gian Heyer at No. 1 to prevent a CNU sweep.

In singles, Shulman paid back Roy 6-0, 6-2, and Heyer overcame Sherrill 6-4, 6-1. Sison, Tobin and Whaling prevailed in straight sets, and Brown overcame two match points in the decisive extended tiebreaker to win 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (12-10).

It was Brown's third three-set victory of the week -- he also won against Mary Washington and Averett in that fashion.
