BURLINGTON, N.C. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team began play in the USA South Tournament with an 8-1 win over Shenandoah on Friday morning.
The third-seeded Captains -- starting six freshmen and a sophomore -- improved on the 7-2 victory they scored over the Hornets during the regular season.
Morgan Huff and
Marion Gloor won in singles and doubles, as did
Kim Morrissett and
Melisande Downs.
CNU first captured two of the three doubles matches and then swept all six singles. CNU won 64 of a possible 77 singles games during the match.
The only teams that beat CNU (18-2) in the regular season are the seeds ahead of them in this tournament on the Burlington Tennis Center's asphalt: No. 1 Methodist and No. 2 Meredith.
Third-seeded CNU will play at 10 a.m. Saturday against Meredith in the semifinals. The Captains lost 7-2 to the defending tournament champion Avenging Angels in a windy home match and are seeking payback.
Speaking of payback, Huff earned some on Friday. The freshman from Lynchburg and Jefferson Forest High won 6-3, 6-0 over
Briana Malley, who had beaten her in Winchester.
In doubles, Huff and Gloor won 8-2 over Malley and
Denise Myrick, reversing a 9-7 defeat to the Hornets' top tandem nine days earlier.
