NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Sophomore
Eric Shulman was named Player of the Year and led a group of five CNU tennis players named to the USA South all-conference team that was announced Thursday.
Shulman, from Glen Allen, Va., played No. 1 for CNU all season against a grueling schedule and had a 14-5 record entering the USA South Tournament Friday.
Chosen to the first team with him was sophomore
Gian Heyer, of Lugano, Switzerland. Playing mostly at No. 2 he has posted a 14-3 mark.
Senior
Martin Brown, of Warrenton, Va., was named to the second team. He was 11-6 on the year playing mostly at No. 3, but also anywhere from No. 2-5.
Included on the honorable mention list were
Dusty Nelson and
Lorenzo Sison. Nelson, a junior from Bemus Point, N.Y., compiled an 8-8 record at No. 4-6, with most matches at No. 5. Sison, a junior from Williamsburg, Va., was 9-11, primarily at No. 4.
The Captains have a 12-8 record against probably their toughest schedule ever. They faced five Division I opponents, defeating three, St. Joseph's, Norfolk St., and Richmond, and played six nationally-ranked Division III teams.
