ORLANDO, Fla. -
won a matchup of regionally ranked opponents Thursday as Christopher Newport defeated Dickinson College 7-2 inside the Wisehaven Tennis Center in York, Pa.
CNU improved to 5-3 for the season, 1-1 on its spring-break trip to the Northeast. The Captains will play their last match of the journey at 11 a.m. Friday against Vassar in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., seeking to avenge an Orlando-area defeat from a year ago.
The Captains swept the doubles matches against Dickinson's Red Devils, with Shulman and
Dusty Nelson winning 8-5 at No. 1.
Gian Heyer and
Garrett Widing scored an 8-2 triumph at 2 in their first match together, and
Martin Brown and
Lorenzo Sison -- the Captains' No. 2 tandem for much of last season -- played 3 and won 8-0 in their first match together this year.
In singles, Shulman pulled away to beat
Ross Anstaett 6-4, 6-0 at the top spot, winning his second love set in two matches on the trip. Shulman is ranked sixth in the South Atlantic Region, and he has beaten No. 7 (Carnegie Mellon's
Alex Nemerov) and No. 24 (Anstaett) in a three-day span. Eight of the region's players eventually will qualify for the NCAA Division III singles tournament.
Also winning in singles were Heyer at No. 2, Brown at 4 and senior co-captain
Dylan Young at 5. It was the Captains' first dual match against Dickinson since Young's freshman year, when he won a third-set tiebreaker at the fourth position to give the Captains a 5-4 home win in 2007.
