Meredith Stops Women's Tennis Streak at 12

NEWPORT NEWS -- After 12 victories to start the season, Christopher Newport's women's tennis winning streak finally ended Sunday afternoon at the hands of Meredith, the defending USA South tournament champion.

The Avenging Angels of Raleigh, N.C., swept three doubles matches in the heavy wind and went on to post a 7-2 triumph.

CNU's victories came from two of the six freshmen among their seven starters -- No. 3 Kim Morrissett and No. 4 Erin Spinks.

Morrissett defeated Casey Collins 6-4, 6-3, and Spinks turned back Alison Flanagan 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

Meredith (5-3, 4-1 USA South) got singles victories from Ashley Pearsall, Kathryn Maples, Betty Edwards and Mollie Musgrave.

Musgrave edged CNU No. 6 player Dani Cribb 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) in the only singles match that split sets

CNU (12-1, 3-1) will return to competition Tuesday at home in an intriguing matchup of two vastly improved teams. The Captains will face North Carolina Wesleyan, which lost a recent 5-4 match to Meredith.
