Women's Tennis Blanks Peace for 12th Straight Win

NEWPORT NEWS -- With one of the toughest matches of the season just a day ahead, Christopher Newport's women's tennis team boosted its record to 12-0 with a 9-0 shutout Saturday of Peace.

Freshmen Dani Cribb of Chesapeake and Melisande Downs of New Kent County won at the fifth and sixth singles spots, respectively, and in doubles without losing a game.

Victories by the doubles teams of No. 1 Morgan Huff-Marion Gloor, No. 2 Erin Spinks-Lauren Kelly and Cribb-Downs put the Captains ahead 3-0.

In singles, Huff earned a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Kristin Starnes at the top spot, and Gloor, Kim Morrissett, Spinks, Cribb and Downs completed the shutout.

In exhibition play, Kate deLacy earned an 8-0 triumph.

CNU, at 3-0 in the conference, returns to action at noon Sunday at home against Meredith, last year's USA South tournament champion.

The Avenging Angels from Raleigh, N.C., already have played two of the other conference title contenders besides CNU, winning 5-4 against a vastly improved North Carolina Wesleyan squad but losing 5-4 to Methodist.
