Men's Tennis Drops Tight, 5-4, Decision to No. 13 Kalamazoo

SALISBURY, Md. -- Christopher Newport's bid to knock off Kalamazoo College, the 13th-ranked team in NCAA Division III men's tennis, fell just short in a 5-4 loss Saturday on Salisbury University's indoor hard courts.

Kalamazoo, looking to bounce back from a 5-4 loss to 21st-ranked Salisbury earlier in the day, won the first two doubles matches off the court. CNU's Martin Brown and Lorenzo Sison closed the gap to 2-1 with an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles.

In singles, the Captains' Eric Shulman and Gian Heyer posted resounding triumphs. Shulman overwhelmed Nate Eddy 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, and Heyer rolled past Cyrus Jadun 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2.

The Hornets (8-3) went ahead 4-3 with wins at No. 3 and 4 before CNU freshman Kyle Tobin, filling in at No. 6 because of regular starter Garrett Widing's mononucleosis, scored a 6-3, 6-3 triumph to even the match at 4.

Kalamazoo, one of D-III tennis' traditional powers, clinched the win at No. 5 when Alex Dombos posted a closer-than-it-sounds 6-2, 6-0 victory over Dusty Nelson that featured numerous long exchanges.

CNU (6-6) will play at 10 a.m. Saturday in its third match of five consecutive against nationally ranked opposition. The Captains will meet South Atlantic Region rival Salisbury, and that match is planned to be outdoors at the Sea Gulls' tennis center.
