NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The University of Chicago, ranked 14th in NCAA Division III men's tennis, rallied in several close sets to win 6-3 Sunday at Christopher Newport.
CNU sophomore
Eric Shulman, contending for a berth in the national singles tournament, helped his cause by wearing down Will Zhang 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1.
Gian Heyer's second-set comeback netted him a 6-3, 7-5 win over Chicago's
Jan Stefanski at No. 2 to finish the afternoon.
In doubles, which preceded singles, Shulman and
Dusty Nelson won a 9-7 thriller at the top spot. The Maroons overcame a 7-5 deficit at third doubles to win 9-7 and take a 2-1 edge.
Chicago (7-5) clinched on
Dillon Klincke's 6-2, 6-2 win at 6, which put the Maroons ahead 5-2.
CNU (6-5) will play four more nationally ranked foes in the next two weeks.
