CNU Men's Tennis Tune Up for Chicago with Shutout of Greensboro

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Ten Christopher Newport players registered victories on a beautiful Saturday afternoon as the Captains won their USA South Athletic Conference men's tennis opener, scoring a 9-0 home victory over Greensboro College.

Sophomore Chris Yost, playing No. 1 doubles for the first time in his career, and sophomore Eric Shulman won 8-2. Also scoring doubles victories were sophomore Tom Whaling and senior Dylan Young at No. 2 and freshman Kyle Tobin and Robbie Wagner at 3.

In singles, No. 2 Gian Heyer and No. 6 Young posted 6-0, 6-0 triumphs. No. 1 Shulman and Nos. 3-5 Garrett Widing, Martin Brown and Lorenzo Sison also cruised in straight sets.

Because of a favorable weather forecast Sunday and a poor forecast Monday, the Captains (6-4) and the University of Chicago decided to play a day earlier than planned. They will meet on CNU's courts at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The Maroons, coached by Hampton High graduate Marty Perry, are ranked 14th in Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

CNU, ninth in the South Atlantic Region, is trying to crack the national rankings, which now include 29 teams.
