NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's women's tennis team ran its record to 9-0 Thursday by achieving its third shutout victory of the season, beating Elizabeth City State 9-0.
The victory came over an ECSU squad that qualified for an NCAA Division II regional a year ago and returned its top four players. The Vikings lost by only 5-4 last season to CNU, which had an almost entirely different cast then.
The Captains swept the doubles matches, shaking up the lineup below the top tandem of
Marion Gloor and
Morgan Huff, who won 8-5.
Melisande Downs and
Lauren Kelly gained an 8-3 victory at No. 2, and
Dani Cribb and
Kim Morrissett won 8-3 at the third spot.
In singles, Huff overcame a 5-1 second-set deficit to defeat
Christina McLean 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 1 position. No. 2 Gloor, No. 3 Morrissett and No. 5 Cribb won in straight sets.
Kate deLacy, subbing directly at No. 4, rose to the occasion with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph.
Stephanie Peed completed the shutout, bouncing back for a 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4) victory at the sixth spot.
Sophomore
Dana Burns, a rare returnee on CNU's team, earned an 8-4 victory in the only exhibition match.
The Captains return to the CNU courts for Saturday's noon match against USA South opponent Greensboro. The CNU men and the Pride men will play each other at the same time on the other side of the fence.
