Richard Roethel got his national career off to a good start by placing 11th in the penthahlon at the NCAA Divison III National Championships.
Roethel, from Farmingville, N.Y., started the five-event contest with an 8.55 clocking, worth 702 points, in the 55-meter hurdles. He then leaped 21-2 1/2 in the long jump, good for 688 points.
After earning 502 points in the shot put with a toss of 33-8 3/4, he earned 794 points in the high jump by clearing 6-6 1/4.
In the final event, the 1,000-meters, he posted a time of 2:55.48 to finish with 3355 points in his first national competition.
CNU opens its outdoor season next weekend at the William & Mary Tribe Open.
