BLACKSBURG, VA - Virginia Tech hosted Division I & III schools on the last day to qualify for their Indoor National Championships. The elite group from CNU posted 8 personal records (PR) including two Provisional Qualifiers and 6 All-Time Performances with
Chris Banks' (Newport News, VA) School Record in the Weight Throw and
Richard Roethel's (Farmingville, NY) improvement in the High Jump leading the way.
Banks had a consistent series in Shot Put, near his lifetime best, topping out at 14.93m/48-11.75 -- his second best result ever. On to the Weight Throw,
Banks unleashed CNU's first ever 17m throw and broke the 56' barrier, too, landing one at 17.10m/56-1.25.
In the High Jump, freshman
Richard Roethel was looking for a little insurance on his potential ticket to Nationals. Sitting at #13 in the Pentathlon, he was a good bet to get in, but not guaranteed. At 2.04m/6-8.25, he was on the bubble in the High Jump, too. 2.05m seemed to be a safe bet to assure his entry but the progressions at Virginia Tech were scheduled to hit 2.06m -- a little extra security if he could clear it. On his third and last attempt he secured his ticket to the National Championships. Along with improving his standing as the #2 High Jumper in CNU History, he moved to the #6 position on the National Lists. When the final fields were announced for the Championships, his inclusion in the High Jump allowed his addition to the Pentathlon field, so the rookie will be busy on both days of the Championships.
Two Captains moved to #3 on our All-Time Lists. Junior
Matthew Winkler (Palmyra, VA) did it on the track with a three second PR in the 800m (1:55.03). In the field,
Adrianna Carter (Williamsburg, VA) moved herself up to the #3 spot in the Weight Throw, adding over two feet to her previous best (13.38m/43-10.75). Teammate J
uliana Yensho (Standardsville, VA) added a foot and a half to her PR and landed at #5 on the Weight Throw List (12.68m/41-7.25).
In the women's 800m,
Michelle Stauffer (Fort Valley, VA) came in at 2:25.42 which ranks #9 in CNU History.
Kristen Bell (Vienna, VA) cut another second from her 400m best to 60.18 and
Anton Bowman (Springfield, VA) inched his PR up to 6.77m/22-2.5 in the Long Jump.
Richard Roethel will represent the Captains in Greencastle, Indiana for the Division III Indoor Championships. Go to the
