Women's Tennis Moves to 2-0 With 9-0 Win Over Virginia Union

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport's women's tennis team tuned up for its spring-break trip by posting its second shutout of a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponent.

The young Captains improved to 2-0 with a 9-0 triumph Feb. 25 over Virginia Union at Centre Court Racquet Club.

VUU brought only five players, so the Panthers from Richmond defaulted No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. CNU won 76 of the 82 games played on the indoor hard courts.

Freshmen Morgan Huff of Lynchburg and Dani Cribb of Chesapeake won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, while freshman Erin Spinks of Winchester and sophomore Lauren Kelly of Syracuse, N.Y., blanked their opponents 8-0 at the second spot.

Melisande Downs of New Kent County and Dana Burns of Norfolk received the forfeit at No. 3.

In singles, Huff, Spinks, Kelly, Downs and Kate deLacy of Arlington earned victories at the top five positions, with Spinks, Kelly and deLacy posting shutouts. Stephanie Peed of Fredericksburg was a forfeit victor at No. 6.

CNU, which beat Chowan in its season opener, will leave Saturday for the Orlando, Fla., area to take in some sun -- hopefully -- and tennis.

The Captains will play three matches in Central Florida, all against fellow Division III opposition. They'll meet Hanover on March 1, Alma at 11 a.m. March 3 and Ursuline on March 4.

Hanover is located in southeastern Indiana.

Alma's only match this year has been a 5-4 loss to Davenport. Alma, located about 50 miles north of Lansing, Mich., was 8-12 a year ago, 2-4 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Ursuline is located in Pepper Pike, Ohio, 13 miles east of Cleveland.
