Women's Tennis Opens With 9-0 Win Over Chowan

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - One of the youngest women's college tennis teams in the country got off to a dominant start Tuesday as Christopher Newport defeated Chowan 9-0 in roughly 90 minutes at Centre Court Racquet Club in Newport News, winning 88 of the 94 games played against the Division II Hawks from Murfreesboro, N.C.

The Captains' roster has 10 players: all freshmen and sophomores.

Morgan Huff, a former Group AA Region III singles champion for Jefferson Forest High in the Lynchburg area, won 8-1 alongside Swiss left-hander Marion Gloor, her freshman classmate, at No. 1 doubles.

Sophomore returning starter Lauren Kelly, bouncing back after a knee injury that sidelined her most of last season, joined first-year lefty Erin Spinks of Winchester's Millbrook High for an 8-0 triumph at No. 2.

Melisande Downs, a New Kent High graduate who's new to CNU this semester, then teamed with returnee Dana Burns for an 8-0 shutout at 3.

In singles, Huff, Gloor, Spinks and Kelly swept matches in the top four spots.

Dani Cribb, a newcomer from StoneBridge School in Chesapeake, won at No. 5, with No. 6 Downs and exhibition player Stephanie Peed from Fredericksburg also easily prevailing.

CNU will play a series of spring-break matches from Feb. 27 to March 7 before playing seven of its next eight matches at home.

The next home match for coach Jenny Nuttycombe's squad should be competitive: March 9 against Virginia Wesleyan.
