NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship Second Round, the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays (15-3-4) shocked the second-ranked Christopher Newport University Captains (20-2-1) in double overtime, 2-1. The season-ending loss came in heartbreaking fashion for CNU, as Kevin Hueber knocked home the gamewinner in the 102nd minute of play.
Johns Hopkins got on top early, scoring in the 28th minute of play, as Sean Duggan deflected a free kick from Sean Coleman into the left side. The Blue Jays were able to hold CNU empty for the rest of the half, keeping the 1-0 lead at the break.
CNU upped the pressure in the second half, and found the equalizer in the 64th minute. Sophomore defender
Sean Moriarty slipped a through ball into the box on the right side, where junior
Danny Franklin sped through and chipped a shot past the sliding keeper. It was Franklin's seventh goal of the season.
The two teams battled the rest of the way in regulation, with Hopkins putting 11 shots on the board to CNU's 10. In the first overtime, it was CNU applying pressure, with a pair of shots, both on-goal. However, just over a minute into the second overtime period, CNU defender
Kyle Rose was called for a foul just on the outside of the box on the left side. Hueber stepped up and placed a perfect shot into the upper 90 on the right side to advance Hopkins into the NCAA Sweet 16.
The loss drops CNU to 20-2-1 for the season, the best single-season mark in school history. Both teams managed 12 shots in the game, with Hopkins edging CNU in shots on-goal, 8-7.
