NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - With a balanced attack, the CNU men built a 12-point halftime lead and went on to a 77-60 victory over Westfield St. in the first round of the Captains Shootout at the Freeman Center Saturday night.
A free throw by
Xavier Parham with 11:23 to go in the first half gave CNU a 19-18 lead and the Captains never trailed again.
The free throw ignited a 10-0 run by CNU with Parham and
Conley Taylor each contributing four points.
The Owls managed to climb back to within one point in the second half three times, but never regained the lead.
Taylor paced CNU with 17 points, while
Mike Green added 14, Parham 11 and
Theo Baker 10.
The Captains will meet York (NY), a 92-72 winner over Eastern Connecticut St. in the first game Saturday, in tomorrow's championship game at 4 p.m.
