NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The CNU men's soccer team, which reached the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year, has been ranked No. 5 in the nation in the final coaches poll of the season.
The young Captains, who often started games with as many as ten freshmen or sophomores, finished the year with an 18-2-4 record. They went unbeaten in the USA South and then swept through the conference tournament to earn the USA South's automatic NCAA bid.
CNU then defeated Cabrini in the first round, 4-0, and took a penalty kick shootout over Lynchburg to advance to the Sweet 16. The first two rounds had been played at CNU, but the Captains had to travel to York, Pa., for the next two rounds. There, CNU defeated Stevens Tech in another shootout before falling to Williams in the quarter-finals in yet another shootout.
