Volleyball Sweeps State Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The CNU volleyball team swept all of the top honors on the annual all-state Division II-III team selected by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.

Junior Caitlyn Jansen, already a third team All-America, was chosen Player of the Year. Freshman Kara Elder was named Rookie of the Year and coach Lindsay Birch was selected as Coach of the Year.

Jansen and Elder were named to the first team all-state, and freshman Abby Hogge was chosen second team.

Jansen had already received numerous honors. The Lorton, Va., native was named USA South Player of the Year, as well as first team all-region, in addition to her third team All-American honor.

Elder, from Charlottesville, Va., was the USA South Rookie of the Year, as well as all-region and honorable mention All-American. Hogge, from Clifton, Va., was also selected all-region and honorable mention All-American.

Birch, who completed her eighth season with CNU, guided the Captains to the best year in school history. The team was unbeaten in the USA South, won the New York Regional in the NCAA Tournament, and reached the Elite 8 round for the first time ever. All of it came in a 36-7 season, the best ever for a CNU volleyball team, with a squad that had no seniors.
