NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Sophomore forward Winston Mattheisen was named a second team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for his play during the 2009 season.
Mattheisen, from Williamsburg, VA, earned the USA South Player of the Year award after leading the Captains in goals (12) and points (27) on their way to an undefeated record in conference play and the first USA South tournament championship under Head Coach Steve Shaw.
In CNU’s, NCAA Sweet Sixteen match against Stevens Tech, the 2008 national runner-up, Mattheisen converted the fourth penalty kick in a shootout to clinch the victory and advance the Captains to their second consecutive NCAA Elite 8.
Mattheisen played in all 24 matches this season earning 23 starts. In addition to leading CNU in goals and points, Mattheisen led the Captains in shots, shots on goal, and was tied for second on the team with two game winning scores.
