NEW YORK, N.Y. - The CNU volleyball team did what no other in school history had done by reaching the regional final and NCAA Sweet 16 with a 25-22, 25-22, 25-23 victory over host, and No. 1 seeded NYU Friday night.
In the first set CNU slipped behind quickly, 5-1 , but went on a 16-6 tear to pull ahead, 17-11. The Violets battled back to within one point twivce, but a kill by Caitlyn Jansen at 24-22 gave CNU the first set win.
CNU also trailed in the second set before tying at 18, 20, 21 and 22. Cory Harris put CNU on top to stay and Jansen's service ace, once again at 24-22, put CNU in command, two sets to one.
In the final set the Captains took the lead early and reached as much as a five-point margin at 17-12. But NYU would not quit, drawing to within 22-21, Jansen delivered two consecutive kills, among the seven she had in the set, and at match-point NYU had a service error to end it.
Jansen finished with 11 kills, while Chelsea McClure added nine and Harris and Kara Elder seven each. Abby Hogge controlled things defensively with 27 digs and Jessie Heavenrich had 36 assists.
CNU is now 35-6 and will face Salisbury Saturday at 8 p.m. for the regional title.
