FERRUM, VA – Christopher Newport men's soccer player Winston Mattheisen was named the Virginia Sports Information Directors College Division Men's Soccer Rookie of the Year while Head Coach Steve Shaw was named Coach of the Year.
Mattheisen scored 16 goals for the Captains and finished with 35 points as a freshman. The Williamsburg, VA native was a First Team All-USA South pick and was also named the conference's Rookie of the Year. He was instrumental in the Captains run to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament.
Shaw led his squad to a USA South regular season title and an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Captains finished the year 17-5-3 overall and 5-0-1 in the USA South. Shaw was also named the USA South's Coach of the Year.
Five Captains were named First Team All-State. Joining Mattheisen were midfielder Brian Tweed, defenders Bryan Davis and Kyle Allan and goalkeeper Matt Tengs.
VA Wesleyan's Brandon Massie was named the State's Player of the Year.
