EWING, NJ – Christopher Newport’s men’s tennis squad advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 9-0 win over St. Joseph’s (NY) Friday afternoon in a first round match hosted by the College of New Jersey.

 

With the win, the Captains set a new school record for wins in a season with 20, becoming the first men’s tennis squad in program history to reach 20 wins.

 

The match began with doubles action. Eddie Glidewell and John Mook (CNU), ranked second in the Atlantic-South, defeated Dan Celentano and Steve Asti 8-0 at No. 1; Dusty Nelson and Lorenzo Sison (CNU) defeated Justin Russo and Nick Donadio 8-1; and John and Jacob Braig (CNU) Greg Conta and Joe Piliero 8-1 at No. 3.

 

In singles play, Mook (CNU) remained undefeated at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Celentano. Glidewell (CNU) also stayed perfect at No. 2 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Conta. Jacob Braig (CNU) defeated Russo 6-2, 6-0; Sison (CNU) defeated Piliero 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4; Nelson (CNU) defeated Donadio 6-0, 6-1 and Ricky Connor (CNU) dispatched Asti 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6.

 

The Golden Eagles of St. Joseph’s conclude the year 12-3. Christopher Newport, ranked 24th in the nation, is now 20-3 and has won 11 straight matches. The Captains return to action Saturday when they take on 8th-ranked Williams at 3 pm.
