Leroy Harper received the 2nd annual Ron Schipper Award.

Harper Receives Aztec Bowl Award

Newport News, VA- Christopher Newport University senior LEROY HARPER was the recipient of the Ron Schipper Award at this year's Aztec Bowl in Mexico.

 

Harper, who played defensive back for the Captains the last four seasons, represented Christopher Newport in the 11th annual All-Star game won by the United States team, 37-19.

 

 The Ron Schipper Award goes to the player that best exemplifies the

work ethic, integrity and strong values that Division III athletics stand for. The honor is named for Ron Schipper, a longtime Division III head coach who guided the US team the first nine years of the Aztec Bowl.

 

Harper, a native of Chesapeake and Great Bridge High School graduate, is currently a member of the CNU track & field squad and twice has been an All-American in the 200 meters. He finished the 2007 football season with 45 tackles and seven pass break-ups for the Captains, and was a second-team all conference selection in the USA South Athletic Conference.

 

Harper became the fourth CNU player to take part in the game. Tommy Fitzgerald (2004), Justin Wood (2005), and Rob Rodriguez (2006) were the first three.
