NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport women's basketball head coach Bill Broderick has announced the addition of Alex Tomlinson to his coaching staff heading into the 2019-20 season. 

Tomlinson comes to CNU following a stint as a graduate assistant with the Tar Heels of UNC Chapel Hill for the last two years. Capping her run with the ACC program, Tomlinson was a part of a coaching staff that helped guide the team to it's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2015. 

Serving as an assistant coach, Tomlinson helped grade film with the coaching staff, filmed all games, and assisted with game-day film exchange. She also assisted coaches with on-court preparation prior to practice and facilitated the UNC Women's Basketball Summer Camp production. While on staff, the Tar Heels defeated a pair of top-ten programs, including the number one team in the country at the time, Notre Dame, in 2019. 

Prior to her time on the sidelines in Chapel Hill, Tomlinson honed her skills as a camp counselor for the North Carolina camps in 2017 and 2018, the Ann Hancock Individual Nike Camp, and the Wingate Women's Basketball Team Camp from 2014-17. 

As a player, Tomlinson was a four-year letterwinner for NCAA Division II Wingate University. She was a two-year team captain and helped guide the Bulldogs to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances. While playing for head coach Ann Hancock, Tomlinson and the rest of the Wingate squad won three South Atlantic Conference Tournament championships and were ranked in the Top 25 national poll. 

She graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice with a Sport Management minor in May 2017 before going on to earn her Master's in Social Work at North Carolina in 2019. 

Tomlinson joins Broderick's coaching staff returning Gregg Brooks, Rachel Ferri, and Tyanka Lee in 2019-20 after the Captains went 25-6 and reached the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 for the fourth consecutive season. Also joining the staff is student assistant coach Madison Howdyshell, who was a senior on last year's team.
