NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
Riding a 13-game winning streak, the fifth-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team was rewarded with a first-round bye and the opportunity to open the NCAA Tournament at home as CNU will host second- and third-round games beginning on Saturday at Captains Turf Field.

Receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after claiming the Capital Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday, the Captains enter the national playoffs at 17-1 overall. The squad will open up the postseason on Saturday against the winner of the Juniata - Kean first-round bout, which will take place on Wednesday.

Joining the Captains in Newport News next weekend, Montclair State also earned a first-round bye and will battle the survivor of the first-round duel between Franklin & Marshall and Misericordia. The victors of Saturday's second-round battles will meet on Sunday at Captains Turf Field vying for a spot in the Final Four.

The winners of the four regional sites will advance to the NCAA semifinals, which will be held on Friday, November 17 at Bellarmine's Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky. The championship game is slated for Sunday, November 19 at Trager Stadium on the campus of the University of Louisville.

This year's postseason appearance marks the Captains' ninth all-time trip to the playoffs. Christopher Newport last appeared on the national stage in 2013 when CNU made a run to the Final Four.

This also marks the second time in program history that Christopher Newport has been selected to host the second and third rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The Captains kicked off their historic 2013 run at home as well. Overall, CNU is 5-1 all-time at home during the NCAA playoffs.
