NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University cross country squads continued to make their presence felt in the community as the Captains spent the morning as volunteers at the Rock 'n Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon on Sunday.
After an early morning wake-up call, CNU headed down the road to help out at the national event. During their time at the Half Marathon, the Captains lent a hand and assisted the organizers by loading up the Gear Check trucks, which helped service more than 10,000 runners at the event.
Sunday's volunteer effort is just one of the many community service projects that the cross country teams have participated in during the year. The squads have also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and were an integral part of welcoming new students to campus in August. At the beginning of the school year, the Captains helped out on freshman move-in day as well as freshman run-around campus day.
In addition to their four volunteer efforts so far, the cross country teams have a slate of community service projects lined up over the course of the year.
The Captains, who kicked off their 2012 campaign on Friday with a pair of victories at the CNU/VWC Opener, will be back in action on September 15 when the squads compete in the William & Mary Invitational.
