NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior
Kaitlin Quigley had a hand in nine of CNU's goals as they defeated Guilford College 21-6 today on Captains Field. The win improves the Captains to 9-1 and drops Guilford to 2-7.
Ashton Marshall scored first for the Captains off a free position shot just over a minute into the game. Guilford equalized just a minute later with an unassisted goal from
E'Leyna Garcia. The Captains then went on a six goal run with Quigley getting three of them.
Guilford scored their second goal at 10:27 in the first half to make it 7-2. The Captains followed with another run, this one with five goals to make it a ten-goal lead at 12-2. Guilford scored another with 1:29 left in the half and CNU was able to put another on the board as time expired to give a 13-3 halftime score.
Four minutes into the second half the Captains tallied another goal to extend their lead. Guilford scored one before the Captains put two more in the net. After another Guilford goal the Captains went on another five goal run to make it 21-5. With five seconds left in the game Guilford scored their last goal to make it a 21-6 final.
CNU dominated the play on the field taking 48 shots to Guilford's 17. The Captains also picked up 16 ground balls to the Quaker's nine and won 17 out of 28 draw controls.
Quigley led the Captains with six goals and three assists. She was followed by
Meghan Harkey with four goals and two assists.
Jessica Singer, Marshall and
Lauren King each scored three goals.
Quigley also led the team in ground balls with three and caused turnovers with two.
Rachel Tomlinson won the most draw controls with four.
Hannah Wilkerson made eight saves for the Captains and picked up her ninth win.
CNU hosts Methodist University next Saturday, April 2, at 3:00pm.
