One of the most decorated men's track & field athletes in program history, Tony Smith is tied for second all-time with eight career All-American honors. Trailing only Hall of Famer Damon Talley's 10 All-American nods, and tied with Greg Boothe, Smith collected four individual and four relay All-American finishes. Competing between the years of 1997-2000, Smith is remembered most for his performances during the 1997 and 1998 Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He earned six of his eight All-American awards in the outdoor meets.
An eight-time conference champion, Smith's best career finish came in the 400 Hurdles during the 1997 Outdoor Championship. He finished in a time of 51.99, good for second in the nation. That mark has held up over 15 years later as the all-time record at Christopher Newport. He also posted a runner-up finish as a member of the 1600 Medley Relay during the 1998 Outdoor Championship, as the quartet finished in 3:16.86. His clocking still ranks among the top four in program history in six different events, including the best 1600 Meter Relay in both Indoor & Outdoor. For good measure, he added the fourth best long jump in program history when he leaped 7.20 meters in 1997.
