Messiah Advances With 1-0 Win Over Montclair St. In Double Overtime
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Messiah College advanced to the sectional finals of the Division III Men’s Soccer NCAA Tournament with a 1-0 win over No. 3 Montclair St. in double overtime.
Danny Thompson’s goal for the eighth-ranked Falcons in the 105th minute proved to be the only goal with Sean Cunningham assisting on the winner.
The two teams played to a regulation tie. Both squads had numerous opportunities to find the back of the net in regulation, but could not.
The Falcons dominated in the shot department, out-shooting the Red Hawks, 14-8.
Messiah’s Jared Clugston had one save in goal while the Redhawks Nick Mele finished with seven stops.
The Falcons improve t 19-2-2 and will meet the winner of the section’s second semifinal, Christopher Newport vs. Emory, Sunday at 3 pm. Montclair St. finishes the year 21-1-0.
