Greensboro Upends Averett, 3-2, Advances To USA South Championship

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Greensboro held on to defeat Averett 3-2 in the first of two semifinals of the USA South volleyball tournament Friday evening in the Freeman Center on the campus of Christopher Newport University.

 

The Pride won by scores of 30-27, 21-30, 30-25, 23-30, and 15-12.

 

Kacie Hyatt paced Greensboro with 20 kills and 11 digs. Michelle Gabson added 12 kills and 14 digs.

 

Joy Daniels posted 44 assists, three aces and seven digs. Bridget McCaskill finished with a game-high 26 digs.

 

For the Cougars, Samantha Kirby led the way with 22 kills on 42 attempts with just three digs for a .452 hitting percentage. She also posted five block solos and seven block assists.

 

Jordan Maupin contributed 15 kills and 12 digs. Kasey Carpenter finished with 48 assists, 11 digs and five block assists. Meredith Schwane led Averett with 21 digs.

 

Averett concludes 2007 with an overall record of 25-14. Greensboro improves to 23-15 and will meet CNU in the championship Saturday at 1 pm.
