Match Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport swept the Greensboro Pride today, 9-0, to win their 13th straight women's tennis match this season. The Captains improve to 15-4 overall this season with a perfect 10-0 record against league foes, setting up a showdown for the regular season title on Sunday against Methodist University.

Sunday's match against the Monarchs (16-2, 10-0) will begin at 11:00 am. The Captains, ranked 14th in the Atlantic South region, will host the 9th-ranked Methodist squad with both teams jostling for the top seed in next week's USA South Tournament.

On Saturday, CNU swept the Pride, dropping just six games in the whole match. The Captains were out to a 3-0 lead after doubles, as seniors Marion Gloor and Kim Morrissett won, 8-0, at the top spot. It was their 12th straight win at No. 1 doubles together, improving to 14-5 this year. Rookie Jackie Gaine also paired with Jodi Noland at the No. 2 position, defeating Paige Brown and Margaret Dubey by an 8-1 final. Gaine and Noland have won eight straight playing together.

In singles play, Angela Stallman picked up her 15th straight win as she took care of Alice Traub at No. 5, 6-0, 6-0. The win ties her for the fifth longest consecutive match win streak in CNU women's tennis program history. Noland also won without dropping a game at No. 3, while Morrissett, Gloor and Melisande Downs rounded out the singles wins for CNU.

The regular season conference finale is set for 11:00 am on Sunday, following a pre-game ceremony for Senior Day. Three Captains will be playing in their final home match, as Morrissett, Gloor and Downs round out their four-year careers.
