ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- For the first time since 2008, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team will play for the conference championship, posting a 6-3 win over #3-seed Meredith College (9-3) in the 2013 USA South Conference Championship Semifinals. The Captains swept doubles play and bounced past the Angels with three singles victories.
Christopher Newport, the number-two seed in this weekend's conference championship, will face top-seeded and three-time defending champion Methodist University (19-2) at 10:00 am Sunday on the campus of N.C. Wesleyan College.
The Captains improved to 17-6 overall this year with the win, highlighted by the play of sophomore
Angela Stallman. CNU's second-year player won her 19th straight singles match, tying Erin Sprinks (2010) for the third longest in CNU history. It would be a trying victory, however, as she dropped the opening set to Taylor Brennan at No. 6. She bounced back for a 6-1 win in the second, but the third was a back-and-forth match that Stallman eventually won, 10-7.
She also paired with senior
Melisande Downs at No. 3 doubles, earning an 8-2 win over Brennan and Mollie Musgrave. CNU swept the doubles points, with an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles from
Kim Morrissett and
Marion Gloor, followed by another 8-4 win at No. 2 by
Jackie Gaine and
Jodi Noland.
CNU would clinch the match with wins from Gloor and Gaine in singles play. Gloor defeated Caroline Hunt (6-1, 6-1) at No. 2 and the freshman, Gaine, added a win at No. 5 over Mollie Musgrave (6-4, 6-4).
The Captains will return to the court on Sunday morning, competing in the conference championship match for the first time since 2008. Live stats will be available at CNUsports.com
