ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team suffered a pair of setbacks on Tuesday, falling to Coe College (12-1) and Saginaw Valley State University (11-9) in Orlando, Florida. Junior Jodi Noland and sophomore Angela Stallman won in both matches, but the Captains fell 7-2 in the first, and 5-4 in the second.

CNU falls to 2-4 overall this season and will wrap up the Spring Break trip with a matchup against Berry College on Wednesday.

The Captains got strong performances on Tuesday by Noland and Stallman, as the only players to pick up wins against the Kohawks. Noland faced Gia Poynter at No. 3 singles, winning 6-4, 7-6. At the No. 6 position, Stallman defeated Tamara Washington, 6-4, 6-3.

Later in the day, CNU was locked in a much closer match against Saginaw Valley State. In doubles play, Stallman played with rookie Jackie Gaine to win at No. 3, dropping Katie Piorkowski and Sean Potter, 8-4. The Captains faced a 2-1 deficit, though, headed into singles play.

The Cardinals would make it 4-1 after the first two singles matches before CNU got back on the board with a win from Noland. The junior won 7-5, 6-2 over Charlotte Wong at No. 3, but Yunjiao Shangguan would win at No. 1 to seal the win for SVSU.

Gaine and Stallman each picked up singles wins at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, for the final score of 5-4. Gaine beat Piorkowski in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) while Stallman bounced back after dropping the second set (6-3, 4-6, 6-3).

The Captains will now face Berry College on Wednesday at Noon.
