RALEIGH, N.C. -- For the first time since the 2007-08 season, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team defeated Meredith College, dropping the Avenging Angels (6-6, 3-2) on the road, 6-3. The Captains (11-4, 7-0) then remained unbeaten in league play with a 9-0 sweep over William Peace University (3-4, 3-2). Senior Marion Gloor led the way on Tuesday, picking up four wins.

For the last three years, Meredith has bested the Captains in both the regular season and conference tournament. CNU ended the win streak, however, with a strong performance in doubles play. At No. 1 doubles, Kim Morrissett and Gloor defeated Puja Patel and Caroline Hunt, 8-4. Rookie Jackie Gaine paired with Jodi Noland at No. 2, earning an 8-5 win over Betty Edwards and Mollie Musgrave; then, at No. 3, Angela Stallman and Melisande Downs took an 8-3 win over Mary Lawrence Newton and Taylor Brennan.

With a 3-0 lead headed into singles, Meredih pulled within one point, earning wins at Nos. 1 and 4 behind Patel and Edwards, respectively. CNU answered, though, behind Gloor's win at No. 2, dropping Hunt (7-5, 6-3), and a pair of wins the the last two positions from underclassmen. Gaine fought for a win at No. 5, defeating Musgrave (6-1, 4-6, 10-5), and sophomore Angela Stallman added a win at No. 6 over Brennan (6-1, 6-0).

With one win in hand, the Captains then took on William Peace University on a neutral court. CNU did not surrender a game in doubles play, with the same three tandems playing together for the Captains. Morrissett added a win at No. 1 singles over Zoe Littmann (6-1, 6-0), while Gloor's terrific day was rounded out with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win over Kristen Edwards at No. 2.

Gaine and Stallman joined Gloor by winning all four of their matches on the day, while Noland added a singles victory at No. 3 over Elledeia Ijames (6-0, 6-0).

CNU will remain on the road for three more matches this week, as they travel to Averett University on Friday, March 29 with start time set for 1:00 pm. On Saturday, the Captains will take on Bridgewater College at 10:00 am followed by a league match against Mary Baldwin at 3:00 pm.
