CNU Women's Tennis Drops Oglethorpe, LaGrange on the Road

Kim Morrissett pulls within one of career singles record

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Christopher Newport University women's tennis team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday, including a shutout win over USA South foe LaGrange College. The Captains improved to 6-4 overall, 2-0 in league play, after dispatching Oglethorpe University, 7-2, in the morning match, before following it up with a 9-0 win at LaGrange. 

In the first match of the day, senior Kim Morrissett picked up career win number 57, pulling within one singles victory shy of the all-time CNU record of 58 held by Frannie Shivar ('08). Morrissett was a doubles winner as well, pairing with Marion Gloor for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles. The CNU tandem combined to beat Katherine Walker and Marcail McGranahan, helping the Captains sweep doubles play against the Stormy Petrels. 

With a 3-0 lead, CNU got singles wins at positions 1-3, and a seventh point from No. 6 singles as Angela Stallman picked up the win. Gloor, Stallman and Jodi Noland joined Morrissett as double winners on Saturday. Noland picked up a straight set win at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1 over MaryAnn Hafen, while Stallman dropped Clara Reinheimer, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6. 

With one win already in hand, the Captains traveled down to LaGrange College for an afternoon tilt against the Panthers in USA South action. CNU swept through the match, winning all nine points handily. Morrissett and Gloor added another win at No. 1 doubles, dropping Caroline Brasier and Kelsey Ellison, 8-2. Meanwhile, in singles play, Gloor picked up her first win at No. 1 singles, dropping Brasier 6-3, 6-4. 

Angie Menendez stepped into the starting lineup with a win at No. 6, dropping Madison McDonald, 6-1, 6-1. The rest of the starters moved up a position and came away with wins up and down the lineup. Noland won, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2, defeating Ellison, while Downs earned a singles win over Blake Alford, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3. 

Christopher Newport will finish out the road trip on Sunday, with a 10:00 am matchup against Piedmont College (2-3, 2-0).
