NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In the Captains only action last week, freshman Jackie Gaine picked up her first collegiate victories at both singles and doubles in women's tennis action. After her effort, the USA South Athletic Conference named her the Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week. 

The Captains defeated St. Mary's College (Md.), 9-0, in the home opener on Sunday, sweeping their future conference opponent.

Gaine defeated Anna Passaniti at No. 5 singles, dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Then, paired with Angela Stallman at No. 3 doubles, she again dropped just a single game in the super-set victory, winning 8-1 over Chelsea Bradcovich and Marie Rau.

The Captains will return to action this weekend, as they travel to face Mary Washington on a neutral court Saturday, followed by the conference opener against N.C. Wesleyan on Sunday.
