FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Christopher Newport University women's tennis team traveled to Fredericksburg, Va. this weekend to play in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championship. CNU won eight on-court matches in the two-day event, led by sophomore
Angela Stallman with three wins.
Stallman and rookie
Jackie Gaine each earned main draw semifinals appearances in the regional event, picking up wins in the Blue 4 and Blue 2 flights, respectively.
Stallman defeated Bridgewater's Rita Murphy (6-2, 6-1) in the opening round, and followed it up with a win in the Quarterfinals against Juniata's Tori Gray (6-3, 6-2). In the semifinals, Stallman fell behind after the first set, but answered to force a tiebreak in the second. Kristen Anderson (Haverford) pulled away with a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) win.
Jackie Gaine impressed in her second collegiate event, defeating Elizabethtown's Christine Evangelista (6-4, 6-1) in her flight quarterfinals. She also picked up the first set in the semifinals, facing Randolph-Macon's Angelina Sportelli, but ultimately would drop the match, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6).
Jessica Clark and
Emily Draheim added singles wins for the Captains, while
Melisande Downs and Stallman combined for one doubles victory in the Blue 2 draw. Clark and
Angie Menendez also picked up one doubles win in the Blue 3 draw.
