LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Christopher Newport women's tennis wrapped up the first day of competition at the Liberty Fall Classic on Friday and the team will advance to play on Saturday. All six Captains players will play in the consolation bracket on day two.
In the top flight of doubles play, senior
Kim Morrissett and junior
Jodi Noland played two matches on Friday, falling in the opening round to Jennifer Ansari and Ellie Linsell (Appalachian State), 8-0. The two bounced back and played well in the consolation round against Longwood's Marta Pinyol and Allie Shulman, but were eliminated in an 8-6 final.
In singles action, all six Captains suffered opening round setbacks.
Angela Stallman had the best showing for CNU, winning seven games in the two-set loss against Virginia Tech's Frances Peyton. Stallman fell 6-3, 6-4 in Flight 7.
Marion Gloor also won four in the first set of her match against Jordan Kerns (WVSU), but ultimately would fall 6-4, 6-0.
In the third flight, Morrissett took two games in the second set against Valerie Thong from host Liberty (6-0, 6-2). Newcomer
Jackie Gaine also won a pair of games against Jessie Boda from Liberty (6-1, 6-1) in the sixth flight.
CNU will return to action Saturday, with Morrissett's first match set for 10:30 and the remaining beginning at Noon.
