NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport University Director of Tennis
Eric Christiansen has announced the addition of three to the tennis staff for the 2012-13 season.
David Weiner has been named Assistant Coach for both the men's and women's teams. Victoria Ford will join the sideline for the women's squad and
Eric Shulman will join the men's tennis coaching staff.
Ford, a two-time AA Singles' Virginia State Champion in high school, is set to begin her first coaching post at Christopher Newport. A local product out of Lafayette High School in Williamsburg, Ford was a two-time member of the All-State singles team and finished her high school career with a combined 125-20 record. She was a member of the Syracuse tennis team for one year and rounded out her collegiate action with three seasons at the College of William & Mary. Ford is majoring in Kinesiology and Health Sciences at William & Mary.
Weiner will serve as Assistant Men's and Women's Tennis Coach with Shulman working as Student Assistant for the men during the fall season.
Weiner graduated from Christopher Newport University in 2008 with a degree in Political Science. He played for the Captains for four seasons, including the 2006 USA South Conference Championship season. The Charlottesville native began his coaching career at James River Country Club in Newport News, serving as the assistant tennis professional from 2007-09. He was responsible for teaching lessons to players of all ages and also served as the primary traveling coach for high level tournament players.
In October 2009, Weiner joined the staff at the Folkes Stevens Tennis Center, one of the premier training sites for players in the Hampton Roads area. He worked with five players who attained national rankings in the top 200 in the last two years and has worked with over 10 different players with a Top 25 Mid-Atlantic ranking in the last two years.
Shulman completed his career at Christopher Newport in the Spring of 2012 and will join the sidelines while completing his degree this season. He is inarguably the most accomplished tennis player in CNU history, earning All-American honors in three straight seasons, including a First Team selection as a Singles and Doubles player in his senior season. The three-time USA South Player of the Year and Tournament MVP is CNU's all-time leader in singles wins (86) and doubles wins (78). He also posted ITA Southeast Regional Titles in singles (2010) and doubles (2011).
Eric Christiansen was named the Captains' first ever Director of Tennis earlier this summer, taking over daily oversight of both the men's and women's tennis programs.
