NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport University women's soccer team won the 2011 USA South Regular Season Championship last week, aided by the efforts of senior
Kendall Dishaw and junior
Meghan Gumbs. For their efforts, the two Captains were honored by the USA South, as Dishaw earned Player of the Week and Gumbs Defensive Player of the Week honors.
In the final regular season game of the year, Dishaw scored twice in the first ten minutes of the game to help the Captains beat Shenandoah University, 2-1, in the championship game. She scored in the fourth minute of action off a corner kick and then netted the eventual gamewinner against the Hornets just four minutes later. The two goals give her seven on the season and a share of the team-lead in points with 15. She also moved into fourth all-time in career goals with 29.
Also honored this week was junior goalkeeper
Meghan Gumbs. The netminder posted a 2-1 record last week, including one shutout and 13 saves. Gumbs held 12th-ranked Lynchburg to just one goal for over 60 minutes and allowed just one more scored by the Hornets, making six saves in the contest. Then, at N.C. Wesleyan, Gumbs earned her second shutout of the season by stopping two shots in the 4-0 victory. Finally, in the USA South Regular Season Championship Game against Shenandoah, Gumbs collected five stops and allowed just one goal to help propel CNU to their third top seed in the last four years.
CNU will be the #1 seed in the USA South Tournament, which begins Tuesday night as the Captains take on #8 N.C. Wesleyan at 7:00 pm. The winner will advance to play in the semifinal round in Martinsville, Virginia on Friday, November 4.
