NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Six CNU student-athletes have been selected to the 2009-10 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Academic All-State Team. Rising seniors
Kenneth Hall (Football),
Barbara Davis (Women's Basketball) and
Brooke Rowe (Cross Country/Track & Field) were joined by 2010 graduates Kristin Nickloy (Softball) and
John Corser (Men's Soccer), along with one rising junior,
Jacob Capin (Men's Basketball).
Kenneth Hall has been a Dean's List student since coming to Christopher Newport in 2007. This year he was named to his third straight USA South Academic All-Conference Team after also posting his best season on the field. He earned First Team All-USA South Honors and was also honored by VaSID as a part of the All-State First Team. He anchored the offensive line that helped CNU rush for over 200 yards per game and score 20 rushing touchdowns.
Barbara Davis was an integral player in the Captains magical run in 2009-10, as head coach Carolyn Hunter's squad ran off 30 straight victories to start the year. Davis started in 19 and played in 25 total games for the 30-1 CNU squad, averaging just over 23 minutes per contest. She is a 4.00 student at CNU, majoring in Psychology, and was named to the 2009-10 USA South All-Academic Team. She ranked fourth on the team in scoring, with 8.4 points per game, while hauling in a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game. She also led the team in blocks with 23.
Brooke Rowe was also named to the USA South All-Academic squad in her senior season, marking a fourth consecutive appearance. She carries a 3.83 GPA as a Mathematics major and will return to the track for one final indoor season in 2010-11 after four successful years as a cross country and track and field participant. Last season, she finished second overall at the USA South Cross Country Championship, helping lead the Captains to an unbelievable 12th straight conference title. She also ran distance track and field, finishing sixth at the Mason-Dixon Outdoor Championship in the 1500 Meter Run.
Kristin Nickloy helped make history this year as the CNU softball team reached the NCAA Division III World Series en route to a Christopher Newport record 42 wins. The rising senior carried a 3.83 GPA as a Biology major, completing her college career as a Dean's List student every semester. She earned her fourth All-Conference Academic Team nod and her third straight All-Conference honors as she was named to the Third Team. She hit .326 on the year with 16 extra-base hits including five home runs. She tied for second on the squad in RBI with 35 and played in every one of the 52 games this season.
John Corser joined Nickloy both on the graduation stage and in the history books, as he was a part of
Steve Shaw's historical men's soccer program in 2009. Corser and the Captains became the first CNU program in history to earn a number one national ranking en route to a second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. Corser started in 15 and played in 23 games his final year, scoring one goal and posting four assists. He helped CNU post an unbeaten mark at Captains Field and was the CNU representative on the USA South All-Sportsmanship Team.
Rounding out the Captain honorees is rising junior Jake Capin is a Psychology/Pre-Physical Therapy major for the men's basketball team, playing in all 28 games for the Captains in 2009-10. He started five games and averaged nearly 16 minutes as a top shooting reserve for head coach C.J. Woollum. Capin scored 6.4 points per game as a deep threat, knocking down over 40% of his three-point tries (.407). He was named to the USA South All-Academic Team in his first year in the league.
