NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team (13-6) will play their NCAA First Round game at Catholic University of America(12-6) in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday. Game time for CNU's fifth consecutive NCAA appearance is 4 p.m.
The Captains and Cardinals last met in the first round of the 2008 NCAA tournament when #15 ranked Catholic beat CNU 18-7 at Captains Field. Catholic scored the first three goals of the game before CNU got on the board on a goal by
Natalie Gilbert. CNU eventually pulled to within 4-3 on goals by
Meghan Harkey and
Kaitlin Quigley. But Catholic then scored ten of the next 11 goals to draw away. For CNU Harkey had two goals.
Catholic enters the NCAA tournament having won their last eight contests and 11 of their last 12 on the way to their third straight Landmark Conference tournament. The Cardinals are averaging 14 goals per game and are led by sophomore Mary Swarthout who has a team leading 33 goals and has also added 21 assists, good for second best on the team.
CNU enters the NCAA tournament after winning the USA South title for the 4th consecutive year. The Captains are led by a pair of juniors,
Kaitlin Quigley who set a new CNU record with 71 goals on the season and
Meghan Harkey who added 57 goals and 45 assists on the season.
