NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Four Christopher Newport women's tennis players gained singles and doubles triumphs on a sunny Saturday as the Captains improved to 10-0 with an 8-1 victory over Greensboro College.
The Captains swept the doubles matches in their USA South opener.
Melisande Downs and
Kim Morrissett finished first -- even before any of the men's matches on the adjacent courts -- with an 8-1 triumph at No. 3.
Marion Gloor and
Morgan Huff won 8-3 at No. 1,
Lauren Kelly and
Erin Spinks won 8-3 at 2.
Using three courts during the early part of singles, CNU and Greensboro were quite competitive in the lineup's upper half.
Morrissett overcame
Meredith Kelly 6-4, 6-3 at the third spot.
Huff, who nearly won in straight sets, raised her level of play in the third set for a 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-1 victory over
Michelle Lemmons at the No. 1 spot, clinching the team outcome.
The only point for the Pride (2-7, 0-2 USA South) came at No. 2 singles, where
Katie Allegro won the last five games to defeat Gloor 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 6-2.
CNU dominated in the lineup's lower half as No. 4 Spinks, No. 5 Kelly and No. 6
Dani Cribb won 36 of the 41 games played.
The Captains will return to action Wednesday in Staunton against the Mary Baldwin Squirrels in a USA South match.
