ORLANDO, Fla
. - Erin Spinks and
Lauren Kelly won in singles and together in doubles Monday as the Christopher Newport women's tennis team began its spring-break trip to Central Florida with a 6-3 victory over Hanover (Ind.) in Orlando.
CNU, which started five freshmen and a sophomore (Kelly) on Monday, improved to 3-0 and next will play Alma (Mich.) at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
An 8-4 triumph by Spinks and Kelly, coupled with a default victory by
Melisande Downs and
Kim Morrissett at No. 3, gave CNU a 2-1 lead after doubles. Hanover's doubles victory came at No. 1 from
Allie Gullett and
Heather Washburn, who defeated
Morgan Huff and
Marion Gloor 8-4.
In singles, Spinks, Kelly and Dani Cribb all won in straight sets to clinch the victory for the Captains.
As in doubles, Hanover defaulted at the bottom position because of a team illness, giving Downs a victory without her taking the court.
CNU added a fourth match to its trip. The Captains will play the Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology at 9 a.m. Thursday, then will face Ursuline of Ohio at 6 that same night.
