NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -  Christopher Newport head men's basketball coach C.J. Woollum collected the 500th victory of his 26-year career as his Captains defeated Greensboro, 73-60, in the first round of the USA South Tournament Tuesday night at the Freeman Center.

Woollum is the first Division III men's head coach in Virginia to reach the milestone.

The Captains trailed only once, near the start of the second half, when Greensboro pushed in front by two, 36-34. But CNU ran off the next 16 straight points to grab a 50-36 margin with 11:56 to play and never led by less than double-digits again.

Christopher Newport was paced by Conley Taylor with 21 points, hitting 8-10 from the floor. Theo Baker added 12 and Brian Hermann 10. Mark Blaingame, who recently went over the 1,000 rebound mark for his career, grabbed 15 boards.

The Captains are now 13-12 for the year and will meet Shenandoah in the semi-finals Friday at 8 p.m. at the Freeman Center.
