Men's Basketball Suffers Overtime Loss to 20th Ranked St. Mary's, 91-82

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - CNU Men's basketball team battled 20th ranked St. Mary's into overtime before falling 91-82 on Tuesday night at the Freeman Center.

The lead changed hands 19 times and the score was tied 16 times. CNU tied the game with 15 seconds to go in regulation with a free throw shot by Xavier Parham of Richmond, VA. After a St. Mary's turnover CNU got the ball back with 1.5 seconds on the clock but a near mid-court shot by Parham hit the rim.

St. Mary's took control in overtime  81-80 on a basket by Camontae Griffin with 2:56 left in the game. They built the lead to 88-82 with 46 seconds to play. 

CNU had five players in double figures, led by Brian Hermann of Newport News, VA who scored 17 points. Mark Blasingame of Roanoke Rapids, NC had 14 points and 8 rebounds. Josh Russell of Suffolk, VA added 13 points. Theo Baker of Virginia Beach, VA had 12 points and Conley Taylor of Newport News, VA had 10 points. Griffin led St. Mary's with 34 points, including 19-21 from the free thrown line.

The loss drops the Captains to 9-10 for the year and St. Mary's is now 17-3.

The Captains return to action Saturday, February 6, in Rocky Mount, NC at 4:00 pm.
