FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Three Christopher Newport athletes received recognition from the USA South this week among their Athletes of the Week.
Junior Chris Olson was named Golfer of the Week after a sizzling performance at the Tom Kinder Memorial Tournament. He set a school record with a 36-hole 70-66—136, shattering the old mark of 141 held by Chris Kline, who shot that score twice. In addition, Olson’s 66 equaled the school record of Matt Hopkins, who also had accomplished the feat twice. The Captains finished second as a team, two shots behind host Bridgewater.
Kristopher Gant was named Football Defensive Rookie of the Week after making six tackles, including 3.5 which were for losses, during CNU’s thrilling, 27-21, triple-overtime win over Salisbury. He had 1.5 sacks for a total of nine yards.
Kara Elder was named Volleyball Rookie of the Week. She averaged 3.6 kills, 3.0 digs and 0.5 blocks per set as CNU went 5-0 for the week, including four USA South wins.
