NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Longtime Christopher Newport cross country coach Keith Maurer has resigned his post it was announced Thursday.

One of the most successful cross country coaches in the region, he stepped down to pursue other interests.

Maurer was the cross country head coach for 13 seasons and was involved with the track & field program since 1993.

Maurer brought the program to national prominence, as 45 runners in his 13 years were named All-South/Southeast Region. Thirteen of those 45 runners advanced to the National Championships. In 2001, Matt Sinclair, a three-time conference champion, was crowned the regional champion and earned All-America honors at the national event.

Aimee Gibbs was a four-time conference champion and made four trips to the regional and national meets. Also, David Woodson and Amy Wampler made appearances at the national championships in 2007 and 2008.

Maurer’s squad dominated conference action, winning all but two championships in his 13 years. He also coached 19 men’s and women’s individual champions at the conference level. He was named the Men’s Cross Country coach of the year nine times and Women’s Coach of the Year 11 times.

His expectations went far beyond running, as his teams have carried the top GPAs in the school’s Athletic Department. The women’s squad was named a National All-Academic Team by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association in 2007 and 2008. Megan Roberts was named All-Academic as an individual in 2007. Woodson brought home the same accolade in 2008 for track & field.

Maurer was also an Assistant Track & Field coach since 1993. His runners hold 10 of the school’s 12 indoor records in distance events and eight of the 14 outdoor marks. As a whole, they hold 142 of the spots on the school’s all-time lists. Megan Fogarty participated in the 2006 Indoor mile at the National Championships and was named an All-American and Woodson competed in the 2008 steeplechase at the Outdoor Championships.
