NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport’s women’s tennis squad snuck out a 5-4 victory over USA South rival Averett Saturday afternoon on the CNU Courts.

In singles, Johanna Heikkinen defeated Kayla Connor (CNU) 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-0) at No. 1; Alannah Suchomel (CNU) defeated Ilona Kilpi 6-1, 6-1; Kassie Avent (CNU) defeated Eliisa Alatalo 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3; Megan Brooks (CNU) defeated Niina Marttila 6-2, 4-6, 6-4; Samantha Powelll defeated Dana Burns (CNU) 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 and Mary Ann Feeney (CNU) defeated Megan Kemp 6-1, 6-4.

In doubles, Heikkinen and Kilpi defeated Connor and Suchomel (CNU) 8-6; Powell and Alatalo defeated Avent and Brooks (CNU) 8-4 at No. 2; and Burns and Feeney (CNU) defeated Marttila and Kristin Butts 9-1.

The Cougars fall to 1-6 overall and 1-4 in USA South play. The Captains improve to 6-4 on the year and 4-1 in conference matches.

Christopher Newport returns to action Sunday when they host Ferrum at 12 pm.
