BURLINGTON, NC – Christopher Newport’s softball squad advanced in the USA South Tournament with a 5-1 win over Averett Friday afternoon.
The Captains scored three times in the first and added two more in the third as the Cougars plated their only run in the second inning.
Renee Ashworth led the way for Christopher Newport going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a double. Ashley Mani was 2-for-2, Mary Kennedy went 2-for-3 and Jessie Atkinson was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Kristen Rowe tossed six innings, allowing one unearned run, on six hits, walked three and struck out five to improve to 18-1.
AU falls to 17-15 while CNU is now 32-5. The Captains return to action Saturday when they take on Peace at 12 pm.
